This was widely known for centuries. Anybody who has had cannabis while hungover, or while they've a hassle, can attest to the fact. It relaxes your muscles. If you have eye strain it relaxes your eyes.
In the 1980s and 1990s a synthetic form of THC known as Marinol was awarded to chemotherapy and AIDS patients as opposed to smoking a joint. It was intended by the U.S. government to kill the medical cannabis movement at the (ahem) bud. Back then the authorities understood that cannabis was real medicine. As ancient as the mid-1970s, scientists had discovered -- that THC killed cancer cells.
This ground-breaking discovery has been made during a Nixon-funded research project supposed to demonstrate that cannabis caused cancer.
From the 1980s, and in the midst of the HIV epidemic that struck America, cannabis was widely used by a number of patients as a way of relieving the nausea, pain and preventing of that disease. We understand that THC isn't THE active ingredient of cannabis. It is just one of dozens of active ingredients. And in connection with pain, CBD is apparently the most significant single chemical.
What's becoming clear is that CBD isn't just a mild pain killer. It isn't merely an alternative to paracetamol.
Yes, it can get rid of a stubborn headache, and ease a hangover.
It can be used to deal with severe migraines, the consequences of chemotherapy, the pain of multiple sclerosis, or fibromyalgia, of and dozens of other chronic pain conditions -- conditions which blight millions of lives.
Let's have a closer look at some of the sciencefiction. This is only going to cover a fraction of the studies that were done into the effects of CBD on pain, but hopefully enough to convince any doubters out there of the veracity of cannabinoids.
This study to the neuropathic pain associated with multiple sclerosis found that a THC/CBD spray has been effective at treating the pain.
A study into Sativex, which is a cannabis extract created by GW Pharaceuticals and marketed for a scandalous price, showed it was also effective for the "treatment of symptoms of multiple sclerosis, notably spasticity and neuropathic pain, in addition to the treatment of neuropathic pain of other aetiologies".
This analysis, also into Sativex, demonstrated it was effective for neuropathic pain brought on by MS. Patients also discovered that with Sativex "the first pain relief has been maintained without dose escalation".
In 2012 this analysis was printed.
It was an investigation of non-psychoactive cannabinoids, chiefly CBD, to determine their effectiveness. The authors reasoned that: "cannabinoids may represent a novel class of therapeutic agents for the treatment of chronic pain".
Eventually, this study which looked into ways of reducing chronic inflammation and pain conducted tests . "
I really could go on. There have been dozens of studies on both THC/CBD and CBD. The evidence is indisputable and overwhelming.
CBD is a superbly effective and unique pain killer.
In the past ten years we've seen an explosion in the amount of opiates used and abused. The unwanted effects of these drugs can be deadly, and the dependence can lead to lifelong distress, an never ending dark night of the spirit. Given everything we know about the devastation these opiates are doing to millions of us, and given what science is telling us about the non-addictive, non-lethal cannabinoid alternatives, there can be no doubt that something must be done. Doctors need to be taught about the endocannabinoid system, and the role it plays in our health.
So far as pain is concerned, physicians must reevaluate. When someone is suffering from a chronic pain condition that the first course of therapy should not be an opiate. It should be a cannabinoid.
